Stem cell science - hope, hype and reality

Public Forum in Association with the ALP National Conference

Where: Maritime Museum, DarlingHarbour, Tasman Light room,Sydney
When: 7.15pm, Saturday 3rd
December 2011

Many Australian's already travel abroad for proven medical treatments such as cosmetic surgery and fertility treatments usually for reasons of cost or availability. However if faced with an incurable disease or disability, would you travel overseas for an experimental treatment?

Type stem cells and any condition into your favourite search engine and in a matter of seconds you will be presented with a long list of tantalising options for cures and treatments. The majority of these treatments have not been medically proven to be either safe or effective and yet increasing numbers of Australians are choosing to participate in these experimental stem cell therapies with unknown consequences.

This panel will explore the reality and potential for stem cell science, the state of Australian stem cell research, and what Governments and policy makers can do to ensure this valuable field of research maintains the momentum.

Don't Miss it!

Join leading Australian stem cell researchers, patient advocates and special guests in a lively discussion about the choices facing people with devastating disease and injury and how we can bolster our local research towards finding treatments for currently incurable conditions.

Invited speakers include: Professor Martin Pera, Director of Stem Cells Australia; The Hon Kate Lundy, MP; and patient advocates for spinal cord injury Alan 'Hammer' Bloore and multiple sclerosis Jackie Kay AM.
