Community Heroes program continues to generate publicity
The Parkinson’s Community Heroes program launched in April 2021 (Parkinson’s Awareness Month) continues to pay off in publicity and raised community awareness for the 18 Support Groups which participated.
The program allowed Support Groups to name heroes who had assisted them in their local communities.
Nominations included local politicians, clubs providing meeting venues, Allied Health professionals and leaders of art, exercise, and other activities beneficial for people living with Parkinson’s.

Nowra Support Group nominated Werninke Craft Cottage as its Community Hero. Support Group Leader Jo Szcepanowski (right) and local Parkinson’s Specialist Nurse Nina Digiglio presented the award.
In Kiama, community volunteer and local Rotarian John Clarke was honoured as a Parkinson’s Community Hero by Support Group Leader Lesley Errington.
Julia Fry, founder and former long-term Leader of the Chinatown Bilingual Support Group was honoured for her contributions by being named as a Parkinson’s Community Hero. The presentation was made by Rosann Ng (left)
Eurobodalla Occupational Therapist Ruth Hassall (centre) was named by the local Support Group as its Parkinson’s Community Hero for this year. The award was presented by Joy Overs (left) and Jan Rapley.
In Newcastle, Ben Payne – local head of charity Movers and Shakers NSW – was named by the local Parkinson’s Support Group as this year’s Parkinson’s Community Hero. Support Group Leader Sandra Elms made the presentation.
